Between 1958 and 1971 the 1/4 mile track at Bowman Gray Stadium hosted NASCAR’s top division. That stopped with the arrival of Winston sponsorship, which ushered in NASCAR’s modern era, as all tracks shorter than 1/2 mile long were dropped from the schedule.

This left Bowman Gray without NASCAR racing until 1982 when NASCAR initiated their weekly racing program. Today the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series is as important a part of the track’s schedule as Grand National racing was in the 50s and 60s.

Divisions

The track’s top division is for Modified cars. The other divisions are Sportsman, Street Stock and Stadium Stock. Every meeting includes races from each division and a typical night’s racing at Bowman Gray includes two 25-lap Modified races, two 20-lap Sportsman events and a 20-lap Street Stock race. One or two Stadium Stock races are also held, depending on the number of entries.
